Shipping Disruptions Are Extending Propylene Glycol Lead Times. What Import Buyers Should Plan For

Propylene glycol pricing in 2026 is not everything. Longer routes, freight costs, insurance, and replenishment time all reshape how overseas supply actually works economically.

What Happened?

Maersk reported in June and July 2026 that Middle East shipping remained unpredictable. Carriers moved cautiously around key routes. Reuters reported on July 23 that many carriers were still avoiding the Suez Canal and routing around the Cape of Good Hope instead.

Routing around the Cape adds roughly 10 days to Asia-Europe voyages. ChemAnalyst linked Q1 European PG firmness to longer shipping routes, higher freight and insurance costs, and reduced prompt import availability.

Why This Matters for PG

A cheaper overseas PG quote can lose its edge once you factor in freight, insurance, extra inventory, delayed replenishment, and working-capital costs. Procurement teams comparing Asian, European, and North American sources need to look at landed economics, not unit price alone.

What Buyers Should Watch

1  Transit time by route. A roughly 10-day extension can shift reorder points and safety-stock requirements.

2  Freight and insurance surcharges. These costs move independently from PG pricing and can wipe out an import advantage fast.

3  Prompt domestic availability. Imports take longer now. Local PG can carry more value even at a higher quoted price.

GreenChem Takeaway

In a disrupted freight market, lead time is a procurement cost. Build transit variability, safety stock, and working capital into every domestic-versus-import comparison. Do not treat freight as something added after you pick a supplier.
